Summer Outdoor Classes

Gym to Crag

Perfect for the first time and beginner climber.

Guests will head to a local climbing area for four hours and climb with a PRG, AMGA SPI certified instructor.  It’s a great way for beginning climbers to gain outdoor climbing experience in a safe and supportive environment.  Gym to Crag includes one week of climbing and gear rentals at the Portland Rock Gym to help you prepare for and get the most out of your climbing adventure!

Time: Every Saturday & Sunday (starting May 7th, 2016) climbers will head to a local crag from 10AM-2PM.

Price: $72 | $66 for Annual/EFT Members

Six spaces available for participants 12 years of age or older.

Important Information:

  • All participants will meet at specified crag parking lot.
  • Helmets, harnesses, ropes, draws, and the rack are provided.  Shoes can be provided but participants should go by the gym to try them on and get the correct size before hand.
  • Participants are required to fill out a waiver prior to participating.

Smith Rock Trippin'

  • 6:1 client to guide ratio
  • 8 person max each day
  • Participants must be top rope belay certified.

Intro to Outdoors: Sport Climbing

Welcome to the Sharp End.
 
There are many things you need to know when taking your climbing out of the gym and on to the rock. One important skill is knowing how to safely put up your own route through lead climbing. Equally important is the ability to safely remove yourself and your gear from the wall once the day is done. Join us for this 2-day outdoor clinic covering topics like clipping, belaying, anchor cleaning & rappelling, risk management, and the nuances of outdoor lead climbing. Participants must have their permanent top-rope belay certification (yellow card) or have been TR belaying for at least 6 months.

Intro to Outdoors: The Basics

New to climbing? Want to get outside right away? Outdoor climbing isn’t just for the seasoned veterans or elite climbers, it’s accessible for all levels of abilities. Let us show you how to get outside when you’re just starting out with this informative 2-day course. You’ll learn how to belay, how to tie-in, rope management, and safety skills.  Includes week of climbing & gear rental at the gym!

Anchor Cleaning and Rappelling

Perfect for the gym leader looking to take their skills to the world outdoor climbing. 

This one day intermediate clinic focuses on the skills needed to safely clean routes and use rappelling techniques to leave the wall with all of your gear and ready for the next climb!

Intro to Outdoors: Trad Climbing

The world is your oyster!

In this two-day course, you’ll learn gear placement for active and passive protection, gear selection,  anchor building, route finding skills, and risk management.   Because students of this course will benefit from utilizing personal trad gear, our instructors will help you to build a selection of gear which best suites your purposes before the class begins.  Participants need to be lead certified and comfortable leading 5.9 in the gym.  1:4 guide to client ratio.

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policies

If you would like to reschedule your class, we require 1 weeks notice. For reschedules within 7 days of class, a fee of half the regular cost of the class will be charged. Cancellations without rescheduling will result in half the cost of the class returned in the form of store credit for services. The remaining amount is forfeited.

No-Shows: If you are unable to make your event time, call us! No-shows forfeit the entire price of the class or event.
